SALMON ARM MUSEUM &
HERITAGE ASSOCIATION AT R.J. Haney Heritage
Village & Museum 751 Hwy. 97B NE s P.O. Box
1642 s Salmon Arm, BC V1E 4P7 Press Release “High Tea”
“Memories are built on traditions” The tradition of High tea has been credited to
Anna, Duchess of Bedford. In 1840 lunches were light and large
dinners were held at a fashionably late evening hour. The Duchess,
who suffered "a sinking feeling" around four o'clock in the
afternoon, would have her servants sneak her a pot of tea and some
breadstuffs. She began inviting friends to join her and soon other
hostesses were making this practice popular. ”R.J. Haney Heritage Village and Museum is proud
to host their 3rd Annual High Tea on Sunday May 27th from 1-3pm. You
are invited to join in this lovely tradition of tea, delicate
sandwiches and succulent treats, set among the beautiful
surroundings of the Village. Music will fill the air as you sip tea enjoy The
Stoney String Quartet. This four sibling’s quartet includes 2
violins, a viola and Cello is sure to be a delight of the afternoon
social. Dale Johnston, a local storyteller will share
stories from our heritage past. Dale started her career teaching in
Primary Schools, she later became a Remedial Reading Teacher
travelling to many of the schools in the area, mainly teaching at
South Broadview and Salmon Arm West. Diane from the Shuswap School of Ballet and her
troupe of young dancers will be performing traditional Ballet dance.
Ballet originates from the 16th and 17th century French courts. This
proficient form of dance requires that one must be extremely
dedicated to the art and diligent in regard to practice. Salmon Arm Museum Curator Deborah Chapman will
share the heart touching “Story of Ruth” which begins October 5,
1921. When the gate swings shut at Asterfield, a farm and the
residence of Annie Florence and Arthur Adair Brooke, Doctor Connolly
arrives on the scene. At 11:30 pm, he examines Mrs. Brooke, sees
that his patient is in advanced stages of labour, and decides to
take her to the General Hospital in town. Learn the rest of this
story as Deborah shows images from the collection. While at High Tea take a tour of the Haney
House. Haney House is the gem of R.J. Haney Heritage Village and is
only open to the public at special events and for private tours.
Over the last year the Haney House has had some major restoration
and is looking its best for the upcoming season. The House was
constructed around 1910 it is a hybrid of a practical farmhouse with
touches of gentility added to it. Featuring lead glass window and
fancy woodwork, all lead us to believe that the Haney’s aspired to
something better.
Croquet will be set up on the lawn, having the
reputation for being a courteous High Tea game, be sure to test your
friends at this sociable sport. Items will be up for bidding at the
Silent Auction silent auction tables you never know what treasures
